Will your Mejuri Jewelry Tarnish?

Updated: Sep 8, 2020

As a jeweler's assistant I always get asked the golden question. "Is it fake?" which is just them saying "Please tell me I didn't waste my money on this!" Fake isn't the right word but we'll get to that another time.

What is Mejuri jewelry

made out of?

“We only work with high-quality, enduring materials, from precious metals to chains, set with genuine gemstones and ethically sourced diamonds.”

The materials they're talking about are 14k yellow/white gold, sterling silver and gold vermeil. You don't really have to worry about the first two. You're probably familiar with them already. Gold vermeil is a different story.

Gold Vermeil

I can't begin to tell someone something is layered or plated gold (two different things) because they panic. If the piece isn't solid it doesn't matter what I say next because to them it's not "real". Gold vermeil is durable and beautiful, it's just not 14k gold. This doesn't mean it doesn't have 14k or 10k gold. It takes an experienced jeweler to look at two different chains and tell you which one is which. Even they struggle sometimes.

Gold vermeil is a layer of gold over sterling silver. Not just any layer, it is over 14x thicker than gold plating. So even if you remove the layer you are still left with a high quality durable material they offer.

Why isn't their jewelry more expensive if it's made from gold and silver?

Behind the 10x Markups v. Mejuri's markup.

Not gonna lie, 10x sounds like the extreme. I'm sure there are brands and retailers out there that mark up that much. It also depends a lot on what it is. Local jewelers are way less likely to mark up that high. They want you to keep coming back to them not take everything you have in your pocket.

All I can say is that Mejuri is jumping through a lot less hoops than others to give you their mark up. Hoops like extra marketing which usually does crank up the price.

Just buy it!

As someone who is now able to get most of her jewelry at wholesale price I'm just going to say if you have items in your cart and you can afford the purchase, GO FOR IT. Their quality and price point are worth spending on.

If you are wondering about their ethical practices then I would look more into that. Mining is not an industry known for its ethics. Although some are trying to change that for the better. Mejuri says they source ethical diamonds. Believe me that makes me so happy and I'm glad they're using their influence to promote better practices.

Take care and as usual, if you're not sure, look it up.
